The United States House of Representatives Armed Service Committee

 

The oversight responsibilities of The United States House of Representatives Committee on Armed Services is conducted primarily within the context of the committee's consideration of the annual defense authorization bill.  The annual defense authorization bill covers the breadth of the operations of the Department of Defense (DOD) as well as a significant portion of the annual operating budget of the Department of Energy.  The annual national defense function budget of approximately $310 billion involves millions of military and civilian personnel, thousands of facilities, and hundreds of agencies, departments, and commands located throughout the world.  The committee continues to perform general oversight on the structure and management of the Department of Defense and related topics.

The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over veterans’ matters on disability, compensation, insurance, small business, employment, and housing.  The subcommittee is involved in the Veterans Benefits Administration, the National Cemetery Administration, as well as veterans programs administered by the Department of Labor, Small Business, and the office of personnel Management,  The subcommittee oversees Arlington National Cemetery and shares jurisdiction with the Armed Service Committee on matters affecting the All-Volunteer force.
