Cadet Days

Our Cadet years were highlighted by two men who played major roles in our lives both as Cadets and, later, as Officers.  They were John F. Kennedy, the President of the United States when we graduated, and Douglas MacArthur, who made numerous visits during our Cadet years and delivered his famous "Duty, Honor, Country" Speech shortly before our Graduation.

Our Class also was able to enjoy, as Plebes, a Football Season that may well be the last of its kind for Army.  The Army Team was undefeated in 1958 and was, for a part of the season, the Number One ranked team in the country.

JOHN F. KENNEDY

He was elected during our time as Cadets.  We marched at his Inauguration and danced at one of the Balls in Washington, D.C.  Spoke at our Graduation and George presented him with a Class Ring.  We were young officers when he died in 1963.

• Dave has once again provided us with a photo of what good marching skills look like in a difficult time and place.  We had been outside, standing in slush or snow (the latter was preferred) for a few hours before the Parade began.  We still showed the Great American Public why we deserved to march at the head of the Parade.
• Dave has also saved (where does he get these things?) a recording of the Superintendent, General Westmoreland, introducing George who, in turn, presented JFK with a Class Ring.
• The Ring has since been recovered by our Class.  You may be interested in seeing it or reading about its recovery.

DOUGLAS MacARTHUR

• No explanation required; it is simply "The Speech".  We heard it just weeks before Graduation.  It is available from the AOG Website on CD as well as numerous places on the Internet.
