Section 10: The West Point Memory Book

The West Point Memory Book was established by the Class of 1927. The West Point Memory Book is composed of leather-bound, loose-leaf volumes. Each page is made of heavy parchment with an attractive color border of West Point scenes. The name of the deceased is printed in a cloister style calligraphy script at the top of the page, together with the years of birth and death and, if the deceased is a USMA graduate, the graduating year. The names of those persons or Classes making the donation are recorded in the Memory Book with no indication of the amount of the gift. Individual donors and Classes donating will only be listed once on a deceased's Memory Book page, regardless of how many donations they have made in memory of the deceased individual. Memory Books are maintained in the Alice McDermott Memory Room on the second floor of the Herbert Alumni Center.

The purpose of the Memory Book is to generate unrestricted revenue to benefit the USMA or the AOG while honoring a deceased graduate or friend of West Point. Since there are additional costs incurred in the creation of pages and maintenance of the Memory Book, it is requested that all memory donations be a minimum of $100.

Checks should be payable to either “West Point Fund – SUPT’s Annual” (which is an unrestricted account benefiting USMA) or “AOG - Long Gray Line Endowment” (which is an unrestricted account benefiting AOG). Note on the check or in an attached note that the gift is “In Memory of Name.” Memory Gifts exceeding $1,000 may be directed to any approved need of the Academy or the AOG, and will also be included in the Memory Book.

Classes donating in memory of fallen classmates should do so from a funding source other than their Class Gift Funds. Money in the Class Gift Funds is already part of the West Point Fund and has previously received credit for an IRS charitable deduction and for a donation to the Class.

While the Association of Graduates always acknowledges the contributions with a Thank You note to the donor, AOG would also like to tell the next of kin that a donation has been made in memory of their loved one. It is a tremendous help to the AOG staff if the donor passes whatever information is available about the name and address of the next of kin so that this may be accomplished.
