Summary of Changes to this Handbook
Section 11: Class Advisors

Revisions to the Bylaws of the Association of Graduates in 2000 provided greater participation on the Board of Trustees by individuals specifically representing classes. The number and period of service of Class Trustees (as then designated) was significantly increased. Under the bylaws that went into effect on 1 January 2006, Class Advisors (as now designated) will serve along with Society Advisors and Advisors-at-Large as and advisory group to the Board of Directors. Following are excerpts from Section 7.5 Class Advisors, of Article VII (Advisory Council) of the bylaws which became effective 1 January 2006:

“(a) The aggregate number of Class Advisors shall be 18.

(b) Prior to each Annual Meeting, each class of the United States Military Academy that shall be celebrating during the next calendar year the 8th, 18th, 28th, 38th, 48th, or 58 th anniversary of its graduation will elect or select a Class Advisor and notify the Association of its choice.

(c) Except as provided in the following subsection and Section 7.7, Class Advisors shall serve for three years from the first day of January following their election or selection, unless they should sooner die, resign, or be removed.

(d) The title of those Class Trustees who were elected with terms ending 31 December 2006 and 31 December 2007 shall be changed to Class Advisors, and they shall serve for the terms for which they were elected.

» GUIDELINES

G uidelines have been specifically written for Class Advisors. They are as follows and can also be found at http://www.aogusma.org/aog/bod/D&ARqmts.htm. Those guidelines are as follows with the addition of number 8:

  1. Be dedicated to the ideals and principles for which the AOG stands; be sincerely interested in promoting the welfare of the United States Military Academy and serving its graduates.
  2. Be capable of attending all meetings of the Board or Council, and any committees to which he/she is assigned. “Capable of attending” means being financially able and willing to afford the travel to and from West Point; and able to afford the time away from his/her profession.
  3. Exemplify the motto of West Point: must have a high and well-defined sense of duty; be a man or woman of unblemished integrity; and be patriotic.
  4. Be in good health; be physically able to travel; attend long meetings; and participate actively in those meetings.
  5. Be willing to serve; must be willing to work on projects and programs, apart from Board or Council meetings, with enthusiasm and interest.
  6. Financially support West Point in keeping with his or her ability through individual and/or class gifts, and be willing to assist the Association in donor cultivation and solicitation.
  7. Be nominated and provide critical background information in accordance with our Director and Advisor Nomination Policy (www.aogusma.org/aog/BOD/D&ANominationPolicy.htm)
  8. M ust maintain an open line of communication between the class and the Association of Graduates.

In regard to guideline number 2, it would not be inappropriate, especially in regard to Class Advisors appointed from more recently graduated classes, to reimburse the Class Advisor for expenses incurred related to these meetings and committee meetings, from the Class Administrative Fund.

» PROCESS

Normally in the fall, two years prior to the year the Class Advisor will serve, the Class President/Chairman will receive a letter from the President and CEO of the Association of Graduates asking that the AOG be notified of the name of the individual selected to serve. Notification is requested by November of the year prior to service so that the names can be announced and recorded at the Annual Membership Meeting (which is held as determined by the Board of Directors, normally in the late fall-winter time frame) each year. Questions on this process can be directed to Jean Hoey at (800) 232-4723, ext. 1524 or e-mail address Jean.Hoey@usma.edu.
