A List of Ideas for Society-Sponsored Bicentennial Activities and Events
· Establish a society speakers’ bureau whose aim would be to spread the word about USMA in appropriate local venues during the Bicentennial year.
· Make arrangements with local media to run a series of “spots” or articles on prominent West Pointers in the community.
· Widen the circle of invitees to the Bicentennial Founders Day Dinner to include local VIPs: political, cultural, educational, religious, etc
· If feasible, join with to her societies in the region to organize a larger-than-usual Founder’s Day event in a grander-than-usual setting.
· Either on an individual basis or in concert with other societies in the state work with the DMV to have a West Point license plate created.
· Work
to have proclamations of “West Point” issued by municipal or state leaders
on Founder’s Day 2002. Attempt to stage a ceremony with the mayor
or governor, and try
to have the
media present.
· Develop and article suitable for placement in local newspapers or magazines about contributions of West Pointers past and present to the history of the town, city, region, or state.
· If West Pointers played prominent roles in events that are memorialized in the region – battles, feats of engineering, expeditions for exploration, etc – hold ceremonies or other events at the memorial site.
· Transform existing high-school leadership award programs into “West Point Bicentennial Award” programs, working themes of the Bicentennial celebration into the criteria for winning and employing the Bicentennial logo into any graphics involved.
· If the society normally participates in annual parades or other ceremonies, mark the participation in 2002 with emblems of the Bicentennial such as the Bicentennial flag or banners declaring it the Bicentennial year for West Point
· Work with local schools to publicize the Bridge Design contest: participate in the Essay Contest as the organizational point of contact and by providing graders for the essays submitted by area schools.
· Work
with local library or museum to install an exhibit about West Point.
