Newsletter February 1999
PRESIDENT’s NOTES: We have again qualified as a Distinguished Society. The Army-Navy game and the Academy Banquet provided a very successful finale to a good year, 1998. Both events were very enjoyable. I encourage you to make an effort to attend next year
And now, a new year—1999. Of course, that brings up annual dues. Your support in 1998 was outstanding. We ask for your continued support for 1999. The dues help us to support our activities, the newsletters, etc. They remain at $25.00. Please forward your checks with the attached invoice/response sheet.
We are looking at establishing a Leadership Award to be presented to an outstanding high school junior. To get our feet wet, we would like to start with three high schools. We need to determine how much we can really do, but the idea is a plaque accompanied with a financial award (such as a $500 Savings Bond) of some amount. Although our finances are fairly good, we will have Founder’s Day expenses for our speaker and the event, as well as our routine expenses. Hopefully, we can get started with our own fund and then expand to obtaining donations. If you have any suggestions about the award or if you would like to participate on a committee to develop this program, or possibly sponsor one of the awards this year, please give me a call/letter/email.
Founder’s Day will be on the evening of March 12, 1998 at the Maumelle Country Club. Colonel George (Barney) Forsythe will be our speaker. Mark your calendar now. An invitation with an RSVP will be out later. Please keep us posted on address and phone number changes.
Army’s entry into Conference USA has provided new opportunities for televised games and has also brought games close enough to Little Rock for us to attend. There are three games this year—Tulane, Memphis, and Southern Mississippi—that we might attend, perhaps leasing a bus if the response is adequate to handle the costs. We’d like to get a reading of your interest. There is no formal commitment at this stage. Please check off your interest for each game on the enclosed invoice form. By the way, for those with satellite TV, Army (USA Conference) football is available on the Fox Sports Network.
MG Joesph Franklin, USA, Ret. Chairman of the Alumni Support Committee has asked members of the Association of Graduates to respond to a survey. It takes about 15 minutes and can be found at http://www.west-point.org/service/survey/aog98.
This is a good time to send me your comments and/or suggestions for programming other activities such as a dinner or luncheon outing, whatever your choice. Just make an entry on your dues reply, send an email or letter to TylerWPS@aol.com or to our P. O. Box 2117.
