The JAMES K. HERBERT ALUMNI CENTER is the focal point for graduates returning to West Point. The center has meeting rooms, lounge facilities, and a park in which to reestablish friendships, conduct business, and interact with invited cadets. The Alumni Center improves the AOG's capability by providing office space, computer resources, a publications area, and a library. | |
|
About half the Alumni Center is devoted to these administrative functions. Designed with moveable walls,
the Center's open architecture is readily adaptable to future needs. The Alumni Center will enhance the
AOG's ability to support societies and classes, as well a other programs benefiting USMA cadets and graduates. |

Brigadier General JAMES K. HERBERT was born on February 25, 1909. He entered USMA in 1926. As a cadet,
he distinguished himself as a cadet captain his first class year, as a star man, and as a rifle and pistol marksman.
In sports, he participated in football, track, and cross-country. Amoung his interests as a cadet was
his work with the Tenth Squad. This was a Corps-wide organization dedicated to assisting cadets in need
of special tutoring. |
| General Herbert worked with this program through his four years at the Academy and became its chairman in his Firstie Year. General Herbert graduated number six in his class in 1930 and was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. He received a graduate degree in civil engineering from the University of Iowa. Thereafter, he rose steadily through the ranks of the U.S. Army. Due to his exceptionally meritorious service as Commander of the Los Angeles Port of Embarkation during WWII, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. In 1946, General Herbert retired from the Army and joined, as an executive,
the Schenley Corporation's Roma Wine Division located in Fresno, CA. Upon resigning in 1957,
he became active in farming, banking, and real estate in the San Joaquin Valley.
He served two terms as the President of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce,
twelve years as a director of St. Agnes Medical center, and Finance Chairman and Director of the
Sequoia Council of Boy Scouts of America. General Herbert died on January 22, 1990. \
He is survived by his widow, a son, and a daughter. |
|
Construction of the Alumni Center was made possible by a bequest of $3,000,000 in the will of
General Herbert. His generosity demonstrates the importance he placed in the Alumni Center and
serves as an inspiration for other gifts. It has allowed the AOG to move forward with its plans
to expand its support to the Academy. The James K. Herbert Alumni Center provides a special place
for alumni and their guests and enables the AOG to respond more effectively and personally to the
needs of USMA graduates. |
