AOG Chairman’s Remarks

LTG (Ret.) Ted Stroup ‘62
covered the following topics during his presentation (See slides.)
- Mission and vision. In 1971, Congress required that the
Armed Forces place all Morale, Welfare, and Recreation activities on a self-funding
basis. Given ten years, then 15
years to comply, USMA requested that the AOG enhance fundraising. Our requirements are different from a
civilian institution, in that we do not have to raise funds to pay
tuition, build most buildings or provide scholarships. A major focus can be on service to
graduates.
- Chairman’s Theme. Change includes a reduction in
governance structure to comply with changing federal and state laws but
with continuity of service. Growth requires
donations to provide support.
- AOG Strategic Plan. It should be a living
document that evolves over time.
Its goals are currently in red or slightly
yellow status due to lack of available
funds to move them to green status.
- Constituents. First focus must be on the
graduate. We are from a different culture.
We have a class affinity unknown in civilian institutions. Our West
Point Societies are an untapped resource in many cases, although some are
very active. Friends of West Point
and the Parents Clubs likewise.
- Center of Mass of Graduates is now Class of
’82. First ten years after
graduation are spent getting settled in; thereafter, increasing
participation in AOG and other activities.
- Directors and Advisors are expected to be donors
of record annually to the Long Gray Line Endowment, regardless of other
class or personal participation.
- AOG Committees. Standing committees and others
are chaired by directors.
- AOG Task Forces.
These have a specific purpose and focus. Recruiting and retention especially
could be helped by Societies.
- Advisory Council meets twice annually.
- Advisory Council Role. Includes assessment of current processes
and procedures in selection of Distinguished Graduates annually.
- President/CEO Search. Board will select successor to Hudgins
'64, with a national search firm working pro bono to assist in the search.
