Interviewing (cont.)
Delay answering the salary question ("How much are you looking for?" or "What is your salary requirement?") Try these approaches: "I don't know, it depends on the entire compensation and benefits package. or "I don't know yet. It depends, specifically, on the requirements of the job. Are you offering me the position? If you are, let's review the expectations and requirements. Then, I will be able to give you a well thought out answer. If that doesn't suppress the question, try this: "I am not sure. I know your company is an excellent company, so I am confident you will make me a fair offer given the scope of my responsibilities and the experience I bring to the job." The bottom line here is in a hirer's market (there are an abundance of candidates), you may feel compelled to give them a salary target. If so, tell them the high end of what you believe to be the salary range. Do not provide a salary number you would not be comfortable accepting.
