John J. Neiger — page TWO

We are proud grandparents of three and we are hoping for more! As the saying goes  .  .  . “If we had known grandchildren were so much fun, we would have had them first!”

TWO LITTLE SOLDIERS, Summer 1941: John Neiger III ’61 and Henry Neiger ’x-63 practicing to be good soldiers. These authentic khakis were made in the Philippines while our father John Neiger Jr. ’35 was stationed there.

TWO LITTLE SOLDIERS, Fall 1996: Timothy and Courtney Simon, children of Tracy Neiger Simon, wearing the same uniforms on the day of the memorial service for their great-grandfather, John Neiger Jr.

RECEIVING THE FLAG: John Jr. became a prisoner of war during the Japan occupation of the Philippines and perished there when a POW ship was bombed — his remains lost at sea. No military honors had ever been accorded him. A memorial service with full honors was conducted at Arlington National Cemetery in October, 1996. In this picture, John and Barbara are being presented the memorial flag by Chaplain Ed Maney ’75. The service was also attended by a few of John Jr.’s ’35 classmates.

WELL DONE, GRAND-POP-POP: Following the memorial service, great-grandson Timmy gets a close-up view of the new memorial marker.

Well done
