ANNOUNCEMENT OF DEATH |
It is my sad duty to announce the death of Cadet Robert Heber Van Volkenburg III, a member of the Class of 1961, United States Corps of Cadets, whose death occurred as the result of an automobile accident near Mannheim, Germany. Burial with military honors will be held at Arlington, Virginia on 20 June 1958. |
The late Cadet Van Volkenburgh was born in Fort Benning, Georgia, on 5 November 1938, a son of Colonel and Mrs. Robert H. Van Volkenburgh, Jr.. Colonel Van Volkenburgh is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, Class of 1937. The parents now reside in Germany where Colonel Van Volkenburgh is assigned to Headquarters 34th AAA Brigade. Cadet Van Volkenburgh was appointed to the United States Military Academy as the principal nominee of George Adams Shuford, U.S. Representative from the 12th District of North Carolina. Prior to his admission to the Corps of Cadets on 2 July 1957, Cadet Van Volkenburgh had graduated from Christ School, Arden, North Carolina, where he was active in football, track, soccer,and tennis. He also attended the Munich, Germany, Branch of the University of Maryland for one year. |
While at the United States Military Academy, Cadet Van Volkenburgh was conscientious in his studies, attaining proficiency in all subjects. In addition to the fulfillment of his academic duties, Cadet Van Volkenburgh was active in the Debate Council and Forum, German Language Club, West Point Rocket Society, “C” Squad soccer, and intramural football and swimming. He was in all respects a young man of excellent character, personality, and promise who had well justified his appointment to the United States Corps of Cadets. |
I extend the deep and sincere sympathy of myself and the officers, cadets, and other members of this command to the parents of the late Cadet Van Volkenburgh in their bereavement. His unfortunate and untimely death is mourned as a distinct and regrettable loss to all who knew him well. |
