The Class of 1965 United States Military Academy 31 January 2001
Dear Classmate,
As we near the end of the Supe's tour at West Point, we should be extremely proud of what he has accomplished and the legacy he leaves behind. Part of this legacy is directly attributable to the support our Class has provided, both in time and resources. We can be proud of our contributions. The funding for the Thayer Walk project is near completion with roughly $100,000 of pledges outstanding. To date almost $1,400,000 has been raised with $1,080,000 going to Thayer Walk and our basic Class Memorial - The Forum, $35,000 for the Prep School Endowment, and, $16,500 for a new crew shell. Of the $250,000 remaining in our account, $50,000 is set aside for a future Forum maintenance endowment. The remaining $200,000 is on-hold pending additional technical review of the centerpiece and the impact of the revised master plan. With regard to going forward with a technically enhanced centerpiece, plans will be determined in the future and presented to the Class for review and approval if appropriate. Our thanks to all of you who contributed your time and resources. In April, at our 35th Reunion, Dan briefed the Class on a proposal to enhance the entrance of Arvin Athletic Center. He had just received approval of the MCA funds required to do the basic construction, but, as he stated, there were no funds to make the entrance first class. His request was direct. Does the Class want to do another fundraiser for $1,000,000 to bring the entrance to a standard that befits the memory of Bob Arvin. We voted to do the project. Where are we? I In November, Dave Kuhn, Fred Laughlin, Rollie Stichweh and I started calling Classmates to obtain pledges that would get our campaign off to a good start. In three months, with Leadership Gifts from Ed Knauf and Ross Wollen, 71 Classmates have pledged, contributed or verbally committed to over $600,000 in contributions. The response to the project is beyond all expectations, but, on reflection, totally understandable. Bob was a Classmate, our First Captain, and, a friend. At this juncture, Bob Doughty chairs the Design Committee for the '65 entrance to the Arvin Athletic Center. His committee has discussed initial design concepts and specifications. If you have interest in seeing what has been accomplished to date, log on your browser, preferably Internet Explorer, and enter http://esi2.bluetekt-com in the browser address window. Use usma65 in the two boxes that appear. If you have problems with the web site, call Terry Ryan for help [(H)703-327-4646/(W)703-263-2232]. Enclosed as the last attachment is a pledge sheet for the Arvin Athletic Center project. Please take a moment and consider a pledge. Funds will be due at the Academy in June 2003, and, based on your initial response, we anticipate no problems reaching our goal well before the deadline. One last point - if you have questions regarding the project please call either Bob or myself. For those of you who helped get the Arvin project off to such an exceptional start, our sincere thanks. Our Class is unique - Best, Harry Dermody
