Subject: USMA Class Ring Memorial Program

Class Leaders,

Once again I am asking for you help in making your classmates aware of, and giving them an understanding of, the Class Ring Memorial Program.  Many  members and widows of your class do not receive Assembly, and might not be aware of the Class Ring Memorial Program.  Also, in conversations with grads we have discovered some misunderstanding about this program which is
causing some of them to give it no consideration.  No one is expected to take off his ring and send it in, nor is anyone expected to deny his heirs the opportunity of keeping his ring if they so desire.

The program uses the gold from donated rings from deceased Graduates and others and mixes it into the gold of new graduates' class rings.  Thus, each new Class Ring contains Long Grey Line gold.  This fact is very much appreciated by the new grads who value their rings all the more for the
LGL gold they contain.  We believe that each grad wearing a West Point class ring containing LGL gold will be reminded that he represents the LGL in all he does.

The first class to participate was the Class of 2002 whose rings contained gold from the rings of 31 members of the Long Grey Line. The Class of 2003's rings will contain a portion of the gold from the original 31 plus some gold from the 16 donated this year.  Some of the gold will be saved for future
classes, and mixed in the same manner in the years to come.

A bit of your ring, husband's ring, father's or grandfathers, and their memories, will be part of the rings of graduates for many, many years to come.  Remove the stone, if you wish, before donating the ring.  If you leave the stone in the ring, whatever the AOG can get for the stone will be used to offset program expenses.

We suggest that grads add a codicil to their wills directing their heirs to send their rings to the AOG for the Memorial Ring Program.  This is not binding on the heirs, but ensures that they are aware of the program and of your wishes.  Widows or other heirs who have class rings from deceased
grads might also want to consider that this is a way of honoring their loved
one's special place in the LGL.

Full information on the program is on the Internet at:

 www.aogusma.org/class/classringmemprog.htm.

Or call the AOG Project Officer, Tony Ferraiuolo, at 1-800-446.1563, extension 1563 for additional information.

Thanks for your help,

Palmer McGrew and Ron Turner, Class of 1958

Subject: Response to Classmates

Many, many thanks for the prayers and well wishes from the men and women of '65.  Please pass to all of our Classmates my deep and abiding appreciation for their wonderful messages.  The warmth and spontaneity of their greetings brought  strength and comfort during these difficult times.  We are not going wobbly in any of this.  We are strong and more resolute than ever about our profession, our assigned missions, and the course we charted two years ago.  As you might expect, we are in pain, and we are angry - - caring for our injured and accounting for our missing.  The Army has released the names of 74 of our friends and colleagues who remain unaccounted for - - twenty-two of them were military; 46 were DA civilians; 6 were contractors.  There will be a reckoning in all of this - - more to follow.  Thank you again for your wonderful messages of comfort and caring.  Talk to you soon!

- - God bless. Ric

Ric and John: These expressions of love and support to you both, to Patty and Karen and your families, are from your classmates, all of whom will be keeping you in their thoughts and prayers over these next weeks and months.

From our Pres: Contained below are expressions of support and encouragement from friends of forty years.  More than most people, we know that the Army is in good hands. We know also that the Lord has placed you where you are for such a time as this.  May your decisions be His and may He grant you an extra measure of wisdom as you contemplate how and when to apply our military
might. The respect and love in these notes do well to reflect the sense of a nation that is grateful for your service and confident in your leadership. (Fred Laughlin)

You are going to be involved in a mission which none of us can properly fathom, the success of which will indubitably determine the future of the freedoms enjoyed not only in our lives, as we know them, but more importantly of Addison, Colby, Kirby and Darby and all the other ‘65 grandchildren. Good luck, Godspeed and just know that Strength & Drive is behind you both, our
Army and our great Country!  (Denny Coll)

Thank God that the U.S. Army is being led by officers like you and Ric.  (Harry Haines)

We are so happy to hear that youall are OK.  On the other hand we are devastated by the cowardly act that has been perpetuated on the military and on those civilians in the WTC.  Go get them!  God Speed.  Good hunting!  (Dick Williams '65)

Our prayers to out to you and our Defense Department.  (Richard Kramer)

Don't do what they expect.  Surprise!  Mass!  (John Madia)

Thank God you are both OK. I know your thoughts are on those and their families that weren't so fortunate.  I just know that even though it won't be your specific decisions, the President will do the right thing.  Root out this evil and  use all our Nation's strength and resources to put an end to it. I
hope that the nation's populace will support the need for an anticipated extended seige.
(Dave and Marcella Gnau)

Our class motto...Strength and Drive... has never been more appropriate than it is today; you are our final standard bearers.  Godspeed.  (Jack Barwis, Co L-2, Co G-2)

We, and all of our friends, colleagues, and professional associates are rallying around President Bush and our splendid military. We are so PROUD of you and our soldiers!!  (Don & Davita Nowland)

I spent Tuesday and Wednsday assisting the scared and distraught evacuees from NYC. Most were returning from work. Some had been near ground zero. Your actions on their behalf will help heal their wounds. I trust that both of you will make the best decisions. (Michael Leibowitz)

Please know that our Class stands with you in these troubled times.  (Dave Bodde)

I work for the Pentagon Renovation and was walking around the Heliport at 0940 on Tuesday.  Heard a noise and looked up to see a jetliner coming very fast right at me.  I hit the ground hard asit came by and watched it cras into a ball of fire in the area where we had recently moved folks into
renovated space.  We will stay strong and will rebuild the Pentagon.  My heart goes out to the families of those in the building who did not make it out and the families of the innocents on the plane.  (Frank Probst)

Our prayers are with you as you prepare the USA's response to worldwide terrorism - God Bless America - (Marilyn & Tom Kovach)

We are all praying that God will be with you, providing wisdom and guidance as you make those agonizing decisions that will have such an impact on the future of this great nation and the men and women of our armed forces. (Ron Wells)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this horrific time in our nation's history.
(Dave deMoulpied)

We all heard Douglas McArthur proclaim the American man at arms to be "..the most noble creation..."  Thank you for ensuring our Army has lived up, and will live up, to those words.  God bless all.  (Duke Wheeler)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all our men and women in uniform at this time.
(John and Mary Kay Salomone)

Lead us onward with Strength, Drive and Wisdom.  My prayers are with you.  (Les Hagie)

To all who plan and execute our responses - think methodical, deliberate, relentless and sustained to eliminate the terrorist threat & "May God Bless" the effort - (Joseph D. Hindsley '65)

Our prayers are with you:  strength and drive are good attributes for this task.  (Mike Viani)

This is a terrible event but one that will steel our resolve and I think like that Japanese in 1941 these people will soon regret their cowardly act.  (Peter Lounsbury)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you lead our Army to strategic victory over those who plan, operationalize, finance, support, harbor, and tolerate terrorism.  (Frank Hennessee)

Our prayers and confidence are with you.  The long gray line is assembled in spirit to endorse your most difficult decisions.  (Dan Donaghy)

Ric, Hi roommate. Thank God you're fine. Thanks for the great job you're doing. John, I'm so glad to hear you're fine. Thanks for the good work.  (Frank Prokop)

My heart, soul and prayers are with each of you in this time of decision. Take care and God Bless! (T.J. Kelly)

Hang in there.  It is a terrible tragedy, but perhaps also the time to help the rest of the leadership to understand that, 1) unlike football, in war you can't score when you are on defense, and 2) actions or words that make us feel good are not the same as winning; "...there is no substitute for
victory."  (Jim Helberg)

So glad to hear that you are OK, and we offer our best to you and your families. Go get em -- Strength and Drive.  (Dave and Ilse Gabel)

Our hopes & prayers are with you. Grip Hands.  (Art and Linda Adam)

These are truly times  we kindle our hearts in fellowship with those of a cheerful countenance and soften our hearts with sympathy for all those who sorrow and suffer, and never forget those still serving, especially our classmates.   God Bless and Godspeed in what lies ahead.  (Dave Vann)

DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY! - (Dennis Hawker)

Don't let America make the same mistake it did after Tet in 1968; don't let sensational images of our enemy's "success" weaken our resolve.  The world supports and appreciates your efforts to find and eliminate this evil.  (Johnny Wells)

Our thoughts are with the two of you as you help formulate our nation's response to this unspeakable horror. I was witness to the World Trade Center collapse Tuesday morning in NYC; seeing what the two of you were also subjected to in the Pentagon that same day fills me, as it fills the rest of this country, with a resolve that is firm and unshakable.  We pray for you and our armed forces, in these days of enormous national need.  We are also deeply thankful that we have the two of you at the helm, to steer us through the tumult.  God bless you both!"  (Dan Christman)

Thank Goodness you two are all right.  The boss is going to need all the help he can get from smart, level headed people.  (Tim Thames)

Spizzerinctum! Whatever Westy said it means, it means S&D stands with its leaders whenever duty calls.  (John Alger)

Having the support of the entire Nation, indeed that of the whole civilized world, it is needless to say that each of us in the Class of '65 and our families are standing at your side as you travel through these troubled times.  I know that each of us would physically join you if that were possible.  You are in our hearts, our constant thoughts and our daily prayers.  May the forces of righteousness and justice strengthen you and may God inspire you as you carry out your difficult surgical mission
in an effort to eradicate terrorism. -- (George and Carol Bell)

We cannot imagine all of the trials ahead for you, except that they will be unbelievably 'challenging'. Still, I am reminded of MacArthur's message, and God Bless you both.
(Dick Chaffer)

Glad you are Ok! Get the basturds. (Don Parrish)

Prayers with you.  I'm ready to suit up if you need me.  (Tom Abraham)

May God grant you the wisdom and strength to accomplish His will in this time of national tragedy.  God Bless.  (John Wattendorf)

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in these difficult times. Perhaps at no other time has our class motto, "Strength and Drive" had more meaning for all of us and for our nation. Just remember that those of us who no longer wear the uniform are equally committed to supporting the recovery and future actions. We stand ready to answer your call with all of the experience, talent and resources at our disposal.  (Ralph V. Locurcio, P.E.)

The "Real Thing" has come on your watch. We are totally confident the right guys are there and that you are ready. Strength and Drive are with you all the way.  (Jim Kelly)

I am heartened that two classmates of such character are at the helm of our Army as we prepare to fight the battle that we must. I know that each of us wishes that we could shed our mufti and stand beside you again, but you will have our prayers and every tangible way we can support you. God Bless you--God bless every young American who will go in harms way and god Bless the USA. Strength and Drive  (Don Rowe)

I pray every day that God gives you the knowledge, wisdom, and strength to create the response to this hideous attack that will ultimately destroy it completely.  (Jack Thomasson)

Let the twin towers of American political will and American military might rise from the ashes of the World Trade Center.  May God have mercy on the souls of terrorists everywhere.  (Larry Neal)

Don't stop without the foot on chest final step to beat these guys. I was disappointed with the senior Bush quitting the fight right at the time of true victory, and letting the Iraq guards to run back. Killing these people is the only answer. Don't rely on any other excuse, or any other force, to
do the job.  (Dave La Rochelle)

I was literally watching the WTC come down when I heard of the Pentagon attack. While in shock I immediately thought of you guys and can't describe my confidence in how you'll lead our Army now we know you're OK.  (Ross Wollen)

Ellen and I have you in our thoughts and prayers constantly.  May you both find the strength you need to deal with what you face.  (Ellen and Bernie Ziegler)

As you ready our Army to destroy our enemies know that you and your families have our love, our total support, and all of our prayers forever.  (Mark E. Sheridan)

YOUR STRENGTH AND DRIVE IS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED NOW MORE THAN EVER, YOU HAVE OUR FULL SUPPORT AND OUR PRAYERS.  (RON LAYER)

Anything I can say right now seems very inadequate except for heartfelt thanks that both of you are okay and yet, a heavy heart for all victims and victim's families.  So in the words of John Adams on July 2, 1776, two days prior to the passing of the Declaration of Independence, "God does not give
us strength, He rewards it.  We are a people who have shown the world we can help ourselves, that we have the God-given strength to stand for our liberty.  God help us?  No, sir.  May God bless us."   (Jim Holmes)

Our prayers will be with you and your families as you make  the difficult decisions needed to stop terrorism. GOD BLESS AMERICA!! (William E Lyons)

America has "The Will to Win" and confidence in your leadership. Know that wherever we may be, we grasp hands and support you, ever mindful that "There Is No Substitute For Victory!"
(Joe McChristian, Jr.)

The Country and World is fortunate to have two members of the great class of 65 to lead us in this very important engagement. Please insure the campaign is thorough unlike Vietnam.
(William E Reisner)

You have the firm support of the people of Northern California as you set about your important work. If there is anything I can do to help (high-tech executive with lots of international experience), just call.  (Duncan MacVicar)

Praise the Lord you were spared.  Our prayers are with you, the government and the armed services.  Get the dirt bags who did this.  God bless the USA! Strength and Drive.  (Dennis Brewer)

**************

Cadet  Prayer (included at the suggestion of Joe McChristian)

Oh God, our Father, Thou Searcher of Men's hearts, help us to draw near to Thee in sincerity and truth.  May our religion be filled with gladness and may our worship of Thee be natural. Strengthen and increase our admiration for honest dealing and clean thinking, and suffer not our hatred of hypocrisy and pretence ever to diminish. Encourage us in our endeavor to live above the common level of life.  Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be
content with a half truth when the whole can be won. Endow us with courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy, that scorns to compromise with vice and injustice and knows no fear when truth and right are in jeopardy. Guard us against flippancy and irreverence in the sacred things of life.  Grant us new ties of friendship and new opportunities of service. Kindle our hearts in fellowship with those of a cheerful countenance, and soften our hearts with sympathy for those who sorrow and suffer.Help us to maintain the honor of the Corps untarnished and unsullied and to show forth in our lives the ideals of West Point in doing our duty to Thee and to our Country. All of which we ask in the name of the Great Friend and Master of men.-  AMEN.

It has been brought to my attention that there are several of your classmates trying to reach our company.  We provided the memorabilia merchandise for your class reunion last year.  we have your class merchandise available on our web site, and would LOVE it if you could add a link to your class page that would lead them to our web site.  It would be a big help in your classmates efforts to reach us.  Here's the link.    Just click on the "1965" that is listed in the second line on the home page.  (We had to remove the crest last month to make space for this years' reunions.)
