West Point Leadership Award

WEST POINT SOCIETY OF RICHMOND

            1.1.         Purpose of Award:  To recognize outstanding high school juniors in the Greater Richmond Area who demonstrate exceptional performance in the areas of academics, athletics, community service, good citizenship and leadership.

            2.2.         Eligibility:  All high school juniors attending high schools that agree to participate in this program will be eligible to receive the West Point Leadership Award.

            3.3.         Method of Selection:  Selection for the award will be made by the administration of each respective high school and the name of the recipient forwarded to the Secretary of the West Point Society of Richmond for preparation of the award in time to be presented during the Spring Junior Awards Assembly.

            4.4.         Nature of Award:  The award shall consist of an engraved certificate within a presentation case, a letter of recognition from the President of the West Point Society of Richmond, and an invitation to the recipient and his/her parents to attend a reception held in honor of all award recipients. 

            5.5.         Presentation of Award:  Whenever possible, the award will be presented at the Junior Awards Assembly by a member of the West Point Society of Richmond.  Otherwise, the respective high school principal or the principal’s delegate will present it.

            6.6.         Criteria:

            (a)       In keeping with the mission of the United States Military Academy to produce leaders of character who will devote themselves to a lifetime of selfless service to their nation and communities, the West Point Leadership Award should be awarded to a student who, in the opinion of each high school principal has exhibited exceptional performance in the areas of academics, athletics, community service, good citizenship and leadership.

            (b)       In selecting each award recipient, the following criteria should be considered:

(1)       Academic.  The recipient must have attained an overall grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale in an approved course of study or be in the top 10% of his/her class.

(2)       Athletic.  The recipient must have participated in either a varsity or club sport and preferably have earned a varsity letter or have excelled in an athletic club activity (e.g., swimming, diving, cheerleading, lacrosse, triathlon, etc.)

(3)       Community Service.  The recipient must have rendered selfless service to the community by personal involvement in school, church, charitable or other worthy activities that assist others.

(4)       Good Citizenship.  The recipient must have exhibited the attributes of good citizenship including duty, integrity, respect for authority and commitment to the community and nation.

(5)       Leadership.  The recipient must have demonstrated the willingness and ability to inspire and lead others.  This is the paramount criterion for selection since a good leader will incorporate in large measure the other attributes necessary for selection for this award.

(c)       The student who receives the West Point Leadership Award should be the best all-around student in the junior class and be respected and held in highest esteem by both the student body and the faculty.
